Get the brightness you already have

Not every XDR Mac behaves the same
M1–M3 MacBook Pro
The 14- and 16-inch models have a 1600-nit peak-capable XDR panel, but normal SDR use generally tops out around 500–600 nits. A brightness app can expose more of the panel's range for everyday content.
M4 and later
Apple added up to 1000 nits of outdoor SDR brightness. It is automatic and condition-dependent. A dedicated app remains useful when you want direct control, the 1600-nit peak, and management by battery, heat and your own preferences.
Use the XDR reserve deliberately
Solis extends the brightness control up to 1600 nits, verifies what the panel actually delivered, and automatically eases down for battery and heat. Its Sunlight mode reads the ambient sensor and learns the level you choose at each light level.
